Ages school-age
Make every day Earth Day with this backpack that shows your appreciation for the environment. There’s even a mobile garden, so you can bring a little nature into the classroom.
What you'll need
- Backpack
- Bottle caps, about 7 or 8
- Pictures to go on the bottle caps
- Decoupage glue
- Foam brush
- Magazine and newspaper cutouts of letters
- Succulents
- Globe key rings
How to make it
1. On your home printer, print your favorite pictures and cut them in a circular shape to fit the bottle caps. Brush decoupage glue on to the bottle cap, apply the picture, and then seal it with some more decoupage glue. After they dry, glue them to the sides of the backpack with craft glue (or hot glue, with adult supervision).
2. Cut out alphabet letters from old magazines or newspapers to create a word like “RECYCLE.” You can even spell out your name if you’d like. Brush decoupage glue on the back of the letters first. Stick the letters to the backpack. And then seal them with more glue.
3. Celebrate the environment by turning the pocket of your backpack into a mobile garden. It’s easy to do with succulents. Succulent clippings can sit in your backpack for days without water. In fact, this gives the cuts time to form a “scab,” so they can then be replanted to create more succulents. Just be sure to cut the succulents so that they’re long enough to stay securely in the pocket without falling out.
4. And show you love the earth with a world globe key chain on your zipper pull.
