What you'll need

  • Template for Vanellope’s Candy Clutch
  • No-fray fabric or felt
  • Straight pins for pining the template to the fabric
  • Scissors
  • Fusible bonding web tape, such as Stitch Witchery (sold in fabric stores)
  • Iron and pressing cloth
  • 11-inch length of fabric ribbon (optional)
  • Assorted white and red buttons
  • Red permanent marker
  • Thin decorative red cording or yarn
  • Hot glue gun
  • 4½-inch strip of Sticky-back Velcro

Notes:

You can turn most any cotton cloth you like into no-fray fabric by using double-sided fusible web (such as Steam-A-Seam 2) to fuse two pieces of the material back-to-back.

How to make it

1. Print the template and use it as a pattern for cutting out a piece of fabric or felt for the clutch.

Step 2

2. Press a crease in the fabric 3¾ inches from the lower edge and 1¼ inches from the top as indicated on the template.

Step 3

3. Use strips of fusible bonding web tape to fuse together the two side seams of the clutch, following the manufacturer’s directions.

Step 4

4. Next, attach ribbon trim to the lower edge of the flap, if you like, using additional strips of the web tape. Fuse the ribbon to the face of the flap first. Then fold the ribbon ends around the sides of the flap, and fuse them to the underneath, overlapping them slightly.

Step 5

5. Use a red marker to decorate some of the buttons to look like peppermint candies. You can either color on pie-shaped wedges that meet in the middle or draw a series of small filled-in squares along the perimeter, as shown.

Step 6

6. For a decorative clasp, thread the ends of a 6-inch-length of thin red cording down through the holes in one of the peppermint buttons and then through the holes in a slightly larger white button. Slide the two buttons together and tie the cording ends together beneath them. Knot the ends of the cord and trim them ¼ inch or so from the knots.

7. Hot glue the clasp buttons to the center of the flap. Arrange the other button candies wherever you like on the purse, and hot-glue them in place.

8. For a fastener, attach the two parts of the Velcro strip to the underside of the flap and the corresponding spot on the purse, and the clutch is ready to use.
